Mare Care & Foaling

Cole Ranch either transports or arranges for transportation to the stallion selected for the mare. After the mare is confirmed to be in foal, Cole Ranch will pick up or arrange to have the pregnant mare picked up and returned to our farm. This saves our clients a great deal of money since stallion farms charge much more for mare care than Cole Ranch. When practical, mares are bred and returned to Cole Ranch the same day.

Mares are tested regularly to determine when foaling will occur. As the time approaches, the mare is put into a video monitored foaling stall on a deep bed of fresh straw.

The video monitored foaling stalls have an adjacent apartment where two attendants will live until the foal is standing, nursing, and thriving. Mares are monitored continuously until the birth. When the moment comes, at least two people attend the birth. Intervention is not usually necessary. However, when an emergency occurs, a veterinarian is on call and we will intervene without hesitation.

Immediately following birth, mother’s milk is extracted from the mare and bottle fed to the foal as soon as possible. This important step helps insure that the foal receives an adequate supply of colostrum.
